Sprint to Eliminate 1,000 Jobs: The company said it will make the cuts in its long-distance division even though it is enjoying “unprecedented strength.” The cuts represent 5% of the division’s work force. They will come from the closing of an operator services center in Indianapolis and a customer service center in Reston, Va. Upper-level management positions and others will also be affected, the No. 3 long-distance company said. Ronald T. LeMay, president of Sprint’s long-distance division, noted that the company has reported an operating profit for more than a year. However, operating expenses were up 12% in the first six months of this year compared to a year ago.
