PRO FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : RAMS : Kelm Quiet After Learning of Release
Larry Kelm, the Rams’ starting middle linebacker last season, was released to make room on the roster for wide receiver Ernie Jones, who was acquired in a trade with the Phoenix Cardinals. Kelm, a six-year veteran, left camp without talking with reporters. Reached at his home, Kelm seemed caught off guard by the Rams’ move.
“I have no comment on it,” a subdued Kelm said.
He also would not comment on his immediate plans or his years with the Rams.
“I don’t want to talk about it,” he said.
Kelm was a fourth-round draft pick from Texas A&M; in 1987. His career, though, was marred by injuries. He missed nine games in 1989 because of a foot injury and six games in 1990 because of a knee injury.
Kelm started 14 games last season, but became expendable when the Rams signed free agent Shane Conlan during the off-season.
The move leaves the Rams with only two middle linebackers. Conlan, who has a history of knee problems, and rookie Thomas Homco.

Ram Vice President Jay Zygmunt said that talks with tight end Jim Price remained stalled. Zygmunt said there has been no contact with Prices’ agent since Friday. If Price does not sign by today, he cannot play in the first three regular-season games. . . . Quarterback Jim Everett sat out practice because of flu. . . . Wide receiver Sean LaChapelle left practice early with a sprained thumb. “We don’t think it’s anything serious, but we’ll have it X-rayed as a precaution,” Coach Chuck Knox said.
