Miller Wins All-Around Title

Shannon Miller scored a 9.9 for the uneven bars and followed with a 9.85 on the balance beam to win the all-around title at the National Gymnastics Championships in Salt Lake City on Friday night.

Dominique Dawes, fourth coming out of Wednesday’s compulsories, used a 9.825 on the bars and a 9.675 on the beam to overtake Amanda Borden. Although Dawes edged Miller, 9.8 to 9.75, on the vault, the final event of the evening, Miller wrapped up the all-around title with 78.41 points to Dawes’ 77.44.

In winning her first national title, Miller joined Kim Zmeskal, now retired, as the only American women to hold national and world titles in the same year. Since earning a silver at Barcelona last summer, Miller has won the all-around in the one national and four international competitions she has entered.

Tennis

Top-seeded Stefan Edberg, dehydrated and requiring help from trainers, defeated Alexander Volkov, 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5), and advanced to the semifinals of the $300,000 Hamlet Cup tennis tournament at Commack, N.Y.

Edberg, who will begin defense of his U.S. Open championship next week, saved 15 of 18 break points while the temperature on the court reached 110 degrees.

In other quarterfinal matches, Goran Ivanisevic of Croatia defeated Luis Mattar of Brazil, 6-4, 6-2; Marc Rosset of Switzerland beat Cedric Pioline of France, 6-4, 6-4; and fifth-seeded Michael Chang eliminated No. 3 Sergi Bruguera of Spain, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2.

Sweden’s Thomas Enqvist used a powerful serve for a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory over top-seeded Ivan Lendl in the quarterfinals of the OTB International tournament at Schenectady, N.Y.

The quarterfinals of the $400,000 Croatian Open at Umag were postponed because of rain.

Pro Basketball

George Lynch, a 6-foot-8 power forward from North Carolina who was the Lakers’ first pick and 12th overall in the June draft, agreed to a five-year deal worth about $1.4 million per year.

Kendall Gill reportedly has signed a contract with the Charlotte Hornets, possibly clearing the way for a trade that would send him to the Seattle SuperSonics for guard Dana Barros, swingman Eddie Johnson and a first-round draft pick next year.

The Philadelphia 76ers signed free-agent center Eric Leckner and renounced the rights to center Andrew Lang.

Track and Field

Noureddine Morceli of Algeria let up down the stretch but still ran the third-fastest mile ever--3 minutes 46.78 seconds--at the Berlin International Stadium Fest meet. The time was .46 seconds off the 1985 record set by Steve Cram of Britain.

Leroy Burrell edged Jon Drummond and world champion Linford Christie in the men’s 100-meter dash. It was only the second time that Christie, who finished third, had been beaten this year. Burrell was timed in 10.12 seconds.

In the women’s long jump, Jackie Joyner-Kersee beat German world champion Heike Drechsler with a jump of 23 feet 2 3/4 inches. Mike Powell won the men’s long jump at 26-8 1/4.

World champion Michael Johnson led an American sweep in the men’s 400 meters with a time of 43.94. Butch Reynolds and Quincy Watts followed.

Hockey

Pittsburgh Penguin center Mario Lemieux said his most recent back surgery will keep him out of the exhibition season, but he hopes to be ready for the NHL’s regular-season opener Oct. 5.

The Vancouver Canucks signed 22-year-old defenseman Evgueni Namestnikov of Russia to a multiyear contract.

Auto Racing

The first round of qualifying for the Bud 500 stock car race at Bristol (Tenn.) International Raceway was postponed because of rain. NASCAR officials said the entire 32-car field for tonight’s Winston Cup event would be set in time trials today.

Damon Hill won the provisional pole position for the Belgian Grand Prix. . . . Penske driver Paul Tracy won the provisional position in qualifying for the Molson Indy at Vancouver.

Miscellany

Derrick Boone, a 330-pound lineman at North Carolina Central University, was shot and killed after a party at an apartment complex in Durham, N.C., police said.

The U.S. Golf Assn. has agreed to play the 1996 U.S. Open at the Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Hills, Mich.

Mike Callahan and Ralph Barahona scored two goals apiece to lead the Blades past the Toronto Planets, 6-5, at the Forum in the first round of Roller Hockey International playoffs. The Blades will play the Anaheim Bullfrogs at the Anaheim Arena on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
