THAT’S COOL, HEH HEH: Beavis and Butt-head are quick to say that a video sucks, but will they be as critical when it comes from their own album?

That’s right: The pop personalities of 1993 are doing an album. Well, actually, Geffen Records--who brought you the “Simpsons” album a while back--is assembling an album of songs by bands that B&B; have deemed “cool.” Tony Berg, the Geffen A&R; rep who is helming the project with MTV executive John Canelli, says he has already been inundated with rockers and rappers wanting to be on the album.

Among those set so far are Nirvana (with the previously unreleased “I Hate Myself and I Want to Die”), Megadeth (“99 Ways to Die”--is there a theme here?), Anthrax, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Run-DMC and Sir Mix-a-Lot.

And, yes, the “hosts” will comment between songs just like on the show.

Cool!

“The choice of material and performances will be in the spirit of the show,” says Berg, who hopes to have the album ready for release in November. “There will be a fair amount of outrageousness, but mostly great rock ‘n’ roll.”

Meanwhile, while not looking at Beavis and Butt-head on the air, this week you can look for them in the air. MTV has commissioned a five-story hot-air balloon in the image of the channel’s logo with the dynamic doofuses, and will unleash it over L.A. this week to promote Thursday’s “MTV Video Music Awards” show at the Universal Amphitheatre.
