INDUSTRY CHATTER: Rap kingpin Russell Simmons denies rumors that he’s had a falling out with Columbia Records President Donny Ienner and is shopping for a label deal for his artists, which include LL Cool J and Public Enemy. “I have no intention of leaving,” Simmons said. “Our relationship with Sony is tight, we’re successful and we’re happy. Our partnership is as tight as it ever was.” . . .

The name of Virgin Music Publishing President Kaz Utsunomiya is swirling in the rumor mill as newly appointed Virgin Records president and CEO Phil Quartararo looks to strengthen the company’s A&R; corps. Under Utsunomiya, Virgin Music has gained respect through such signings as Porno for Pyros, Stone Temple Pilots and Pavement. Insiders say that he is extremely attached to the publishing company, but has become creatively dissatisfied since it, as well as the record company, was sold to EMI last year. . . .

Michael Colver, the man many in the music industry credit with preventing passage of 50 album-labeling and lyrics-related legislative measures, has resigned his job as key lobbyist for the Recording Industry Assn. of America for a new Washington lobbying job. Hillary Rosen, RIAA executive VP, says Colver “literally spent all of his time putting out fires that most people didn’t know were happening. If it wasn’t for him, clearly it would have been a lot worse.” The RIAA has hired a new lobbyist and will continue its efforts.
