Protecting, Lauding Immigrants’ Labors

* Your editorial “When Anger Against Aliens Clouds Reason” (Aug. 8) was appropriate in most respects, but one paragraph was shocking in its support and encouragement of illegal activities.

The implication that the employment of illegal immigrant day laborers at the lowest of wages and without benefits is desirable is unconscionable.

1. The employment of illegal aliens is illegal.

2. Non-payment of payroll taxes for employees is illegal.

3. Not reporting wages on payroll information returns is illegal.

4. Payment of wages below minimum wage standards is illegal.

Your encouragement of these illegal activities in order to exploit cheap labor is immoral and unethical.

* Two afternoons a week I volunteer at a Tarzana extended care convalescent facility.

The nursing staff, plus aides and cleaning people, are all immigrants from the Philippines, Mexico, Central America and the British West Indies. I have a feeling this is possibly the case throughout California and other states.

No others seem to want to work in these places where sick, mostly elderly people are.

I for one thank the good Lord for them, and I daren’t think what would happen without them. America is only a couple of hundred years old. Everyone is the offspring of immigrants. (Except, of course, the Indians.)
