BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJOR LEAGUES : Ryan Goes on Disabled List a Third Time
Nolan Ryan, struggling to make it through his 27th and last season, was put on the disabled list Saturday for the third time this year by the Texas Rangers. Ryan, 46, pulled a muscle in his left rib cage during a start in Baltimore last Saturday night and had missed one turn in the rotation. Ryan warmed up on the sidelines before Saturday night’s game at Arlington against the Orioles but stopped after five minutes because of discomfort.
“I knew if I continued to throw I was going to have more problems, so I quit,” Ryan said.
After Texas’ 11-1 victory, the Rangers put him back on the disabled list, retroactive to Aug. 22. Ryan is 5-3 with a 4.53 ERA in 10 starts. He had been hoping to start again sometime next week.
