Bob Walk of the Pittsburgh Pirates has withdrawn his appeal of a five-game suspension for hitting the Dodgers’ Kevin Gross with a pitch. . . . Pirate left-hander Randy Tomlin underwent arthroscopic surgery to remove a bone spur from his left elbow. . . . Reliever Goose Gossage of the Oakland Athletics was put on the 15-day disabled list because of a broken bone in his right wrist he suffered in a fall in the clubhouse. . . . The Chicago White Sox signed free-agent outfielder Ivan Calderon, who was released by the Boston Red Sox on Aug. 17.
