* Technology: In a sign that the burgeoning entertainment/technology industry will also be producing a host of legal issues, the Los Angeles law firm Manatt, Phelps & Phillips is forming an intellectual property department. The Westside firm, a major player in entertainment law, bolstered its staff with eight lawyers from Arter, Hadden, Lawler, Felix & Hall. The department, which will work on the area of law governing the figurative “ownership” of anything from computer software to creative endeavors, will be led by Stephen Tropp, former co-head of Arter, Hadden’s intellectual property practice. . . . Sources confirmed a Daily Variety report that embattled pop star Michael Jackson has backed out of doing the theme song and video for Paramount Pictures’ upcoming Christmas movie “Addams Family Values.”
