PRO FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : RAIDERS : Rocket Might Not Play in Opening Game

After three days of practice, recently signed wide receiver Rocket Ismail has impressed the Raiders’ coaching staff, but he still might not be activated for Sunday’s regular-season opener against the Minnesota Vikings at the Coliseum.

Because he signed after the Raiders’ final cut on Monday, Ismail is exempt from the team’s roster limit until next week. The Raiders have until Saturday to decide if they will create a spot on the team’s final 45-man game roster for Minnesota.

“I haven’t made a decision on him yet,” Coach Art Shell said Thursday at the team’s El Segundo practice site. “If we do use him, he’ll just get a few plays here and there.”

Ismail, who will wear No. 86, is expected to give the special teams a boost with his kick-return ability. The Raiders, however, have said that they are satisfied with tailback Greg Robinson and wide receiver Alexander Wright returning kickoffs, and wide receiver Tim Brown returning punts.

“We haven’t really sat down and thoroughly discussed what (Ismail) will do (when activated),” Shell said. “But, he probably won’t do both.”

Defensive tackle Chester McGlockton and offensive guard Todd Peat, both of whom suffered foot injuries during the final exhibition game, and cornerback Lionel Washington, who injured a shoulder, are expected to play Sunday. . . . The Raiders added linebacker Glen Young, who was released last week, to their practice roster, dropping defensive lineman Jon Baker to make room.
