SPORTSCOPE : 3 Area Players Win at U.S. Open

Three South Bay players won matches Thursday at the U.S. Open at the National Tennis Center in New York.

Pete Sampras, a former Palos Verdes High standout, held off Daniel Vacek of the Czech Republic, 6-4, 5-7, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3), in a second-round match.

Kimberly Po of Rolling Hills advanced to the third round for the third consecutive year with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Sandra Cacic of Bradenton, Fla. Po, 61st on the Virginia Slims rankings, will play 10th-seeded Magdalena Maleeva of Bulgaria on Saturday.

In doubles, Cammy MacGregor, a 1987 Palos Verdes graduate, teamed with Shaun Stafford of Gainesville, Fla. for a 6-2, 6-4 first-round victory over Maria Lindstrom and Maria Strandlund of Sweden.

Lindsay Davenport, a 17-year-old former Chadwick standout, and Marianne Werdel of Palo Alto lost their first-round match to 10th-seeded Sandra Cecchini of Italy and Patricia Tarabini of Argentina, 6-4, 6-4.

Davenport will play 15th-seeded Amanda Coetzer of South Africa in a third-round singles match today.

In a first-round mixed doubles match, Jim Pugh of Palos Verdes and Ann Grossman of Grove City, Ohio, lost to the fourth-seeded Australian team of Elizabeth Smylie and John Fitzgerald, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5).
