OUTLOOK
The Vaqueros lost 18 starters and another part-time starter--and 16 of them were first- or second-team all-league selections--making this the definitive transition year. Irvine won the 1991 Division II title and the 1992 Division IV title and was 25-3 during that span. A repeat performance this season would be unexpected. Last year’s team outscored opponents, 380-135, but only linebackers Wojtkiewicz and Linares return to the unit that posted five shutouts. They figure to get some help from lineman Bodholdt. Receiver Louie was a part-time starter and will be helped by the addition of Noisy, a transfer from Santiago. The task of getting the ball to them falls on quarterback Phelps, who is up from the junior varsity.
