POINT MAGU : Oxnard Man’s Death Is 1st of Holiday Weekend
One person died on Ventura County roads during the first full day of the holiday weekend, authorities said Saturday.
A 28-year-old Oxnard man was killed Saturday afternoon when his van overturned on the Pacific Coast Highway near Mugu Rifle Range, according to the California Highway Patrol. He was not identified pending notification of relatives.
The accident snarled traffic in both directions on the highway.
The CHP also reported heavy traffic throughout the day on the northbound Ventura Freeway from Carmen Drive to Victoria Avenue.
State lifeguards reported large crowds at all area camping parks and beaches and expected even greater numbers today and Monday. The lifeguards, who made seven rescues Saturday, advised beach-goers to stay in areas near lifeguard towers.
The weather should continue to be warm, although coastal areas will cool slightly, with fog and low clouds clearing in the midafternoon. Saturday’s high temperatures were in the mid-70s, and the same is expected for the remainder of the Labor Day weekend.
