Aaron Wildavsky; Dean of Political Science at UC Berkeley

Aaron Wildavsky, 63, an internationally recognized political scientist and author who had taught political science at UC Berkeley since 1963 while serving as department chairman. He was the founder and first dean of the university’s Graduate School of Public Policy. A former president of the American Political Science Assn., he received numerous awards throughout his career, including an honorary degree from Yale University in May. Wildavsky’s specialties included budgeting, the presidency, biblical interpretation and foreign policy. The author of 30 books, he worked through the week of his death. His books include “The Politics of the Budgetary Process” and “Presidential Elections.” Several of his works will be published posthumously. The son of Latvian and Ukrainian immigrants, he graduated from Brooklyn College in 1954 after interrupting his studies to serve in the Army during the Korean War. After his graduation, Wildavsky studied in Australia on a Fulbright scholarship. In Oakland on Saturday of lung cancer.
