OK, so it wasn’t Lord Stanley’s Cup that Bullfrog forward Brad McCaughey and his teammates hoisted Tuesday night at Anaheim Arena.

But the Bullfrogs won a trophy and a championship worth celebrating nonetheless.

After defeating the Oakland Skates, 9-4, to win Roller Hockey International’s inaugural championship series two games to none, the crowd of 8,809 gave the Bullfrogs a standing ovation as they paraded around the rink with the RHI Championship Cup.

Friday, the Bullfrogs won Game 1, 10-7. Anaheim finished the season 17-0-1, the only blemish an overtime-shootout loss (which counts as a tie) to the Blades.

The championship was the second of the year for Anaheim Coach Chris McSorley, who coached the Toledo Storm to the East Coast Hockey League championship.

“Once you get a taste of winning, it’s tough to leave the table,” McSorley said. “Winning that first championship, you love it like your first-born child. But you love all of the championships like all of your children.”

Darren Perkins had two goals and two assists and Devin Edgerton had four assists to lead the Bullfrogs.

Defenseman Bob McKillop, who had a goal and an assist, earned playoff MVP honors. McKillop had nine goals and four assists in the Bullfrogs’ four playoff victories.

The Bullfrogs took control in the second quarter Tuesday night, breaking a 3-3 tie with four goals in the final 6 minutes 22 seconds of the quarter.

After McCaughey, who had two goals, Victor Gervais and Joe Cook scored during a 1:34 span to give the Bullfrogs a 6-3 lead, forward Darren Perkins added a short-handed one with 2:28 left in the half to conclude the scoring blitz.

Perkins skated past Oakland’s Doug Lawrence, then took a perfectly executed pass from Edgerton and chipped it past goalie Brian Flatt for a 7-3 halftime lead.

The teams traded third-quarter goals, then McKillop scored off an assist from Savo Mitrovic and Perkins with 2:11 remaining to seal the victory.

Then the celebration began. As the final seconds ticked off the clock, Lawrence and Bullfrog forward Marc Lyons tangled in the boards then grappled on the concrete slab, stopping play with 1.6 seconds remaining.

While the scuffle delayed the celebration for the Bullfrog fans, they heartily booed Lawrence, who had two goals and an assist, before cheering their title winners.

After the trophy presentation, McSorley smiled as his players began to show off their new prize.

Pointing at his players, McSorley said, “Now that’s how a coach gets paid back.”
