Long Beach : Council Approves Cellular Phones for Crossing Guards

Responding to the recent slaying of a school crossing guard, the City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to buy cellular telephones for emergency use by the city’s 80 school crossing guards.
The city will pay about $44,000 the first year to buy and operate the phones, which should be available in the next few weeks, officials said. Subsequent annual operating costs will be about $20,000.
The council acted in response to the Aug. 9 slaying of crossing guard Catherine Tucker, who was abducted from Burnett Street and Pacific Avenue. Two Long Beach teen-agers have been charged with murder and robbery in connection with her death.
