BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJORS : Davis Released by Orioles
The Baltimore Orioles gave Glenn Davis his unconditional release after acquiring outfielder Lonnie Smith from the Pittsburgh Pirates for two minor leaguers to be named.
Davis, the Orioles’ second-highest paid player behind Cal Ripken, had not played for Baltimore since May 23. The oft-injured first baseman was activated from the disabled list Monday, and that night he got into a shouting match with Manager Johnny Oates because he did not start.
Smith, 37, is expected to join the Orioles on Friday. He batted .286 in 94 games for the Pirates, but is hitting .355 since the All-Star break.
The Philadelphia Phillies sent catcher Doug Lindsey to the Chicago White Sox to complete the Sept. 1 trade for relief pitcher Donn Pall. . . . Nolan Ryan will have a throwing session Friday to determine whether he will return to the Texas Rangers’ rotation Sunday against the Minnesota Twins for what has been designated as Nolan Ryan Appreciation Day.
