Pitzer College Gets $3-Million Gift

Home builder Eli Broad has donated $3 million to Pitzer College in Claremont, with most of the money earmarked for the construction of three buildings to house classrooms, administration offices and an activity center.

In disclosing the gift, Pitzer officials said they would name one of the buildings in honor of Broad and his wife, Edythe, who have donated $10 million to the Claremont Colleges since 1971. The couple has also donated $20 million to Michigan State University, Broad’s alma mater.

Considered one of the world’s richest men, Broad--whose Kaufman and Broad Inc. has built 200,000 homes in Southern California and others areas of the country--said he made the donation to Pitzer because it is the kind of liberal arts school that can be a “catalyst for change” in a California beset by social ills.
