GLENDALE : Beeline Shuttles to Start Charging Fares

Share

A 25-cent fare for a one-way ride will go into effect Monday on Glendale’s popular Beeline shuttle buses, which have offered free service since 1990.

Riders will be required to have exact change in order to board buses on the city’s three routes. The fare will be 15 cents for seniors and the disabled. Children under 5 will continue to ride free.

Tokens, to be sold at select locations, will be accepted after two additional routes are added to the Beeline service in November, city officials said.

The City Council three years ago voted to eliminate the fares in order to boost ridership on the buses, which have operated since 1984. The service has become increasingly popular, with more than 1.2 million passengers expected to board the shuttles this year.

Because of the growing demand, the council in March voted to expand the service by adding two additional routes and seven new buses with larger capacity. Fares collected will be used to recover a portion of the costs.
