Everything Points Graf’s Way in Semifinal Matchup Today
Do you think Steffi Graf is nervous?
She is playing in her 25th Grand Slam semifinal today at the U.S. Open and going up against a player to whom she has never lost and who has a broken finger on her left hand.
Graf, 17-0 against Manuela Maleeva-Fragniere, puts her perfect record on the line as well as a chance to win her third Grand Slam title of the year.
Maleeva-Fragniere, who chipped a bone in her pinky finger last week, is a veteran of one previous Grand Slam semifinal--she lost to Arantxa Sanchez Vicario in last year’s U.S. Open.
In the other semifinal, Sanchez Vicario will play Helena Sukova, her doubles partner.
Win or lose, Sanchez Vicario is assured of taking over the No. 2 place in the rankings from Monica Seles.
Sanchez Vicario is 4-1 against Sukova, 4-0 on hard courts.
