O’Laughlin to Back Up Millis for CSUN Against Weber State
J.J. O’Laughlin will travel to Ogden, Utah, today with the Cal State Northridge football team and serve as backup quarterback Saturday night against Weber State. O’Laughlin, a transfer from Illinois, enrolled in school earlier this week, but was not able to secure 12 units of course work until Thursday because most of Northridge’s classes are full.
He will back up Clayton Millis, a sophomore transfer from Oregon who became the starter after Coley Kyman suffered season-ending ankle and leg injuries last week in a 34-17 loss to San Diego State. Kyman was expected to be released Thursday from Encino Hospital, but lingering post-operative pain has extended his stay to three days.
Also Thursday, freshman offensive lineman Tom Koykka was sidelined with a dislocated left kneecap and freshman tailback Harry Grammer will miss the trip because of a sprained right arch. Koykka, a graduate of Highland High, is expected to redshirt.
Although kicker Matt Ornelaz remains hampered by a sore right quadriceps muscle, he was able to practice. Ornelaz kicked a 37-yard field goal against San Diego State, replacing Jason Camp, who missed a 33-yard field-goal attempt and an extra point. Camp will not travel to Weber State. Ornelaz is expected to handle extra points and field goals, but if his muscle injury prevents him from kicking off, reserve wide receiver Ilkka Laine will do so.
