TOP PERFORMERS

Binh Tran rushed for 217 yards in 24 carries and scored four touchdowns in Costa Mesa’s 55-0 romp over Ocean View.

Tran’s teammate, running back Dwayne Crenshaw, made his varsity football debut after transferring from Edison, and ran like a four-year letterman. Crenshaw gained 110 yards in seven carries and scored one touchdown before leaving the game at halftime with a slightly separated shoulder.

Loara’s Denis Dawson rushed 17 times for 208 yards--including scores of 94 and 44 yards--had 110 yards in returns and three yards receiving. One kickoff return went 93 yards for a touchdown in the Saxons’ 20-14 victory over Western. It ended Loara’s 11-game losing streak.

Valencia’s Jermaine Gray had 10 receptions for 137 yards in the Tigers’ 30-26 loss to Villa Park.

La Habra’s Sonje Berg was expected to serve as Josh Woolf’s understudy at quarterback this season, but Woolf quit the team last week and Berg was thrust into the starting role. The junior responded well, completing 10 of his first 13 passes and 21 of 31 overall for 178 yards, but it wasn’t enough as La Habra came up short, 14-7, against El Modena.

Quarterback Christian Cortez, a converted wide receiver, was involved in all of Santiago’s three touchdowns in a 47-20 loss to Pico Rivera El Rancho. Cortez had 119 yards passing and was Santiago’s leading rusher with 42 yards on seven carries.

Pat Wood of Laguna Beach accounted for four touchdowns as the Artists beat Bolsa Grande, 34-6, in a nonleague game at Bolsa Grande. He had touchdown passes of 44 and 27 yards and scored on runs of 40 and 18 yards.

Los Amigos running back Noah Tagatauli excelled on both sides of the ball in the Lobo’s 20-9 victory over Estancia. The senior ran for two touchdowns, intercepted a pass and added a sack of Eagle quarterback Todd Thompson.

SUN SETS ON SUNDEVILS

The Sunset League continued its domination of Las Vegas Eldorado with Marina’s 20-14 victory over the Sundevils.

The Viking’s victory was the league’s third in three meetings with Eldorado. Edison played a home-and-home series with the Sundevils in 1991 and 1992, winning both. The Chargers’ victory in 1991 was the only blemish in Eldorado’s Nevada state championship season. WHEN

ON THE RECORD

“Tonight we played a very good Brea team, made those mistakes, and we almost got away with it. We played them competitively. So, no, I’m not that concerned.”

--Buena Park Coach Bob Rau after watching his team fumble six times in a 10-7 defeat.

BURN BRIGHT, BURN FAST

The only way to stop El Toro kick returner Jason Giuliano was to end his season. Giuliano took the opening kickoff against Trabuco Hills 15 yards, then returned kicks for 40 and 25 yards in the first half. When he was tackled after the 25-yard return, he tore ligaments in his knee and will miss the rest of the season.

IRISH EYES . . .

Ocean View sophomore quarterback Ted Norman, making his first varsity start, was hoping that he might have a little luck of the Irish with him. After all, his brother Todd, a former All-Southern Section offensive lineman at Ocean View, is now a starting lineman at Notre Dame. Unfortunately for Ted, however, all the luck seems to be in South Bend as Ted was 0 for 6 with an interception before being knocked out of the game late in the third quarter.

DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS

Art Mihalik, offensive and defensive line coach for Garden Grove, came through the gate at Glover Stadium and pointed toward the dressing room for David Pixler and the rest of the team.

“The dressing room,” said Mihalik to Pixler, “is on the far side. Follow it around. The DUNGEON is down below.”

A dressing room is now a dungeon?

“That’s the way it’s been as long as I’ve been coming here (Glover Stadium),” Mihalik said.

And that’s been quite a few years. . . . and dungeons.

Mihalik, former coach at Pacifica and Los Amigos high schools, professional football player and wrestler, has performed in several dungeons, especially as a wrestler.

Mihalik had to face the likes of Classie Freddie Blassie, Mr. Moto and Bobo Brazil.

ON DEFENSE

Mission Viejo recorded the only shutout by an opponent on West Torrance High’s field in the school’s 31-year history with a 17-0 nonleague victory. The Diablos’ aggressive defense held West Torrance to 18 total yards in the second half.

Corona del Mar running back J.R. Walz rushed for more than 1,500 yards last year, but Edison’s stingy defense held Walz to 28 yards in 17 carries during the Chargers’ 14-7 victory. Walz’s longest run all night was nine yards.

Estancia’s defense accounted for all of the Eagle’s points in the 20-9 loss to Los Amigos. A first-quarter safety gave Estancia a 2-0 lead. Mike Pawinski’s 18-yard interception return in the third quarter accounted for the rest of the Eagles’ points.

El Dorado’s defense had a strong night, limiting Century to 101 yards total offense including 49 yards on the ground. The Golden Hawks also recovered four Centurion fumbles and intercepted a pass. Brian Sardina, Spencer Frost, Kevin Haynes and David Myers led the Golden Hawk defensive effort. El Dorado won, 21-0.
