Barbara Byrd is known for her terra-cotta, acrylic and bronze soft-line sculptures of women. Robert Chevron, a native of France, paints impressionistic watercolors of local scenes and people. And Martha Saudek’s vibrant oil paintings of nature scenes have won her widespread recognition.

These local artists’ works will be on display through Oct. 10 at the Artists’ Studio Gallery at The Shops of Palos Verdes, 550 Deep Valley Drive, Rolling Hills Estates.

“Color, Line, and Form” is the theme of the exhibition, which is one of several put on throughout the year by the 30 artists affiliated with the studio.

Byrd usually works in terra-cotta or acrylic, but this exhibition includes two bronze sculptures, “Torso II,” and “Shelter in the Storm,” representing a woman swept by the wind. Her acrylic works include the sapphire blue “Mystic Woman” and the blue violet “Medication.”

Byrd studied for four years with Sergei Bongart at his schools in Santa Monica and Idaho. She was a founding member of the Artists’ Studio Galley in 1987 and is a member of the National Sculpture Society.

Chevron’s paintings include “At the Fair,” a comical piece showing young mothers and children watching Uncle Sam on stilts at a carnival. He also has several paintings portraying children at the beach, in a pumpkin patch, and in other everyday scenes.

“The viewer can relate easily,” Chevron said of his work. He enjoys watercolors, he said, because of “the pleasure and excitement it gives when the colors seem to mingle.”

Saudek says she tries to realistically capture nature with her landscape paintings.

Her work has been displayed in exhibitions nationwide, including the Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center in New York City. She has won more than 100 awards, including a first place in Artist magazine’s 1992 national landscape painting competition.

“I try to capture not only the physical aspects of the scene, but its emotional impact, the feeling I get when originally viewing it,” Saudek said. “The sense of harmony and peace one receives from gazing at a quiet pool, the uplifted spirit one gets from a glorious sunset, from a colorful garden or from the splendor of fall trees. These are the experiences I try to share with others.”

The Artists Studio Gallery is one of two cooperatives affiliated with the Palos Verdes Art Center. The gallery is open daily from noon to 5 p.m.
