The daring 1992 TV movie Danielle Steel’s ‘Secrets’ (NBC Monday at 9 p.m.) rips intothe underbelly of the entertainment business to uncover this truly shocking find: People in Hollywood are fundamentally decent and really, really nice. Linda Purl and Gary Collins star as actors hired to appear in a “Dynasty”-like nighttime soap opera. Also featuring Christopher Plummer and Stephanie Beacham.
Romantic and preposterous all at once, the 1990 Joe Versus the Volcano (ABC Saturday at 8 p.m.) is actually a funny, endearing fable about courage, love and faith. After Tom Hanks’ doctor (Robert Stack) tells him he’s suffering from a terminal “brain cloud,” he accepts billionaire Lloyd Bridges’ offer of unlimited credit. Ultimately, he makes a quick, sacrificial dive into a volcano half an ocean away on an island, which has a rare mineral Bridges must have. Meg Ryan co-stars in a bravura three-role turn. Be prepared, however, for the film’s flat ending.
Fernando de Fuentes’ 1933 El Compadre Mendoza (KCET Saturday at 10:20 p.m.) is a commentary on the self-interested ambivalence of the Mexican middle-class, centering on a land owner who survives the revolution by feigning support of both government and revolutionary forces.
