A 24-year-old Oxnard man died early Sunday after being stabbed in the shoulder during a roadside fight in front of a south Oxnard junior high school, police said.

Miguel Ortiz, who was driven to St. John’s Regional Medical Center emergency room by friends and relatives shortly after midnight, died from a single stab wound to the shoulder, Oxnard police said.

Investigators said Ortiz was involved in a fight with an unidentified person in the 2300 block of Etting Road near Ocean View Junior High School around midnight Saturday.

Ortiz was pronounced dead in the hospital emergency room at 12:15 a.m. Sunday, police said.

Police would not say what might have triggered the deadly altercation, noting that the case is still under investigation. No one has been identified as a suspect in the slaying, police Detective Fred Berry said.

A blood stain remained on the grass in front of the junior high school parking lot along Etting Road late Sunday morning. The site is several blocks from any neighborhoods, but a mobile-home park backs up to Etting Road near the school.

Senior Deputy Coroner Zelmira Isaac said an autopsy was being conducted Sunday to determine the official cause of death.

Ortiz is survived by his parents, who both live in Oxnard, and two younger brothers, Isaac said.
