Weekend Box Office : ‘Fugitive’ Still Leads the Pack

After a record-breaking summer at the box office, overall business dropped less than usual during this post-Labor Day weekend, rarely a period of heavy moviegoing in light of the start of school and competition from pro and college football. After six weeks, Warner’s “The Fugitive,” starring Harrison Ford, is still leading the pack. While none of the three newcomers--”Undercover Blues,” “True Romance” or “The Real McCoy”--started off particularly strong, “In the Line of Fire” broke the $100-million mark on its 66th day out.

* “The Joy Luck Club,” a lyrical tale of four Chinese women and their Chinese-American daughters, brought a smile to Disney’s face after a lackluster summer. The critically-acclaimed film, in its first week of release, played to packed houses in exclusive engagements in Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York. It will be “rolled out” slowly throughout the month.
