State Gives Prenatal Project $88,000

A Ventura County program that helps provide prenatal care for low-income pregnant women and their children has received a budget boost of more than 25% from the state, health officials announced this week.

The Maternal and Child Health program will use the additional $88,000 from the state to expand its outreach efforts, said Paul Lorenz, administrative director of the Public Health Department. The program’s annual budget had been $331,000.

The program seeks out hard-to-reach pregnant women, providing medical attention, health education and preventive care, which reduces the cost of treatment and postnatal care, Lorenz said.

“The goal is to keep costs down and have more healthy mothers and healthy babies,” Lorenz said.
