March Fong Eu, California’s secretary of state, suffered a fractured collarbone and several broken ribs Wednesday afternoon in a traffic accident in Downtown Los Angeles, officials said.

Eu, 71, was being treated for a fractured right clavicle and three or four broken ribs at the Hospital of the Good Samaritan, said hospital spokeswoman Susan Tombrello. She was expected to be hospitalized overnight.

An aide to Eu, Carmelita Paule, said the official was returning to her Downtown Los Angeles office from a luncheon with a community group when the car in which she was riding was struck by a van at the intersection of 11th and Flower streets.

Eu’s driver, state police Officer Bob Jiminez, also was injured and hospitalized. The extent of his injuries was not immediately known, the hospital spokeswoman said.
