Amritraj Replaces Clerc in Infinti Tournament

Jose-Luis Clerc has withdrawn from the Infiniti Champions tennis tournament at Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks on Sept. 29-Oct.3 because of an eye ailment.

Clerc, an Argentinian who resides in Miami, will undergo surgery next week for liquid on the retina. He will be replaced in the 12-player draw by Vijay Amritraj, a native of India.

Jimmy Connors, Bjorn Borg, Vitas Gerulaitis, Roscoe Tanner and Guillermo Vilas are the top-seeded players in the tournament.

Football

A preliminary hearing in Newhall Municipal Court for former Hart High quarterback Ryan Connors, charged with drunk and reckless driving, has been postponed from Sept. 20 to Nov. 15, a court clerk said Friday.

Connors, who set a Southern Section record for passing yardage in a season at Hart in 1991 and is attending UC Davis, had been released on $25,000 bail after being charged with felony counts of driving with a blood-alcohol level of .08 or above and causing injuries in a high-speed car accident in July.

Golf

Sergio Melgar of Thousand Oaks shot a 62 (low net) and Fletcher Pavin of Camarillo shot a 72 (low gross) to lead all golfers Monday in the St. John’s Regional Medical Center-St. John’s Pleasant Valley Hospital Invitational Golf Classic at Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks.

The Crescenta-Canada YMCA in La Canada is sponsoring a golf tournament at Oakmont Country Club in Glendale on Oct. 4. Proceeds will benefit the YMCA’s “Feelin’ Good” youth fitness/healthy lifestyle program.

Gymnastics

A Senior Olympics gymnastics meet is scheduled for Sept. 26 at Valley College. Gymnasts ages 20 and older are welcome to sign up. Entry fee is $2. Events include rope climb, tumbling, floor exercise, vault, still rings, pommel horse, high bar, parallel bars, uneven parallel bars and balance beam.
