Atwater Village : Future of Pottery Co. Site

The Atwater Village Residents Assn. will have a town hall meeting tonight to discuss the future of the Franciscan Pottery Co. site, which the Los Angeles Police Department is considering for a police academy.

The existing academy in Elysian Park is too small for the needs of the department, said Veronica Gutierrez, press deputy for City Council member Jackie Goldberg, who represents the area.

Goldberg, representatives of the LAPD and the property owner will be at the meeting to discuss development of the site with residents.

As currently planned, the new academy will house a cafeteria and an auditorium that will be open to the public, Gutierrez said.

The LAPD has been searching for a site for many years and has narrowed the search to locations in Atwater and the San Fernando Valley, she said.

The preferred choice is the Atwater site, but the LAPD is seeking public input because the site may be contaminated with chemical toxins from a gasoline station that was once there.

The meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Glen Feliz Elementary School, 3955 Glen Feliz Blvd.
