Classic Film Series Starts With David Lean’s ‘Great Expectations’

A classic film series at the Fullerton Museum Center begins Sunday afternoon with “Great Expectations,” the 1946 British adaptation of Charles Dickens’ famous story about an orphan and his mysterious benefactor.

“Great Expectations,” directed by David Lean and starring John Mills, will screen at 2:30 p.m. Mal Mealy, a former actor and local movie buff, will introduce “Great Expectations” and the other films.

Up next, on Oct. 10, is “Topper,” the 1937 comedy starring Cary Grant and Constance Bennett as a couple of sophisticated ghosts.

Vincent Price, the king of the hambone actors, stars Oct. 24 in “Theatre of Blood.” The 1973 horror film features Price as a crazy thespian who kills his critics.

The series closes Nov. 7 with “Cat Ballou.” The 1965 Western spoof stars Jane Fonda and Lee Marvin as comic desperadoes.

Proceeds from the series, sponsored by the Unitarian Universalist Church in Fullerton, will go to the Fullerton Interfaith Emergency Services, Mealy said.
