UCLA : Paper Sues for Records of Sexual Harassment Cases
After failing to obtain UCLA’s records on out-of-court settlements made by the university for sexual harassment, assault or sexual discrimination, the daily student newspaper and its editor filed a lawsuit Thursday.
In a Los Angeles Superior Court petition against the University of California regents, UCLA and its chancellor, Charles Young, Bruin editor Joshua Romonek sought disclosure of records of all such cases “resolved for financial consideration of more than $30,000.”
According to the petition, UCLA officials refused a Public Records Act request brought by the newspaper after Young told a reporter “there are all kinds of sexual harassment charges.” But UCLA officials said that investigations into such charges “would be permanently compromised if the campus could not offer confidentiality.”
