Employers, Workers Back Lunch Shuttle

The idea of running noon-time shuttles in major San Fernando Valley business centers is gaining support among workers and businesses, according to a recent survey.

The survey--of 100 employers and employees in the Chatsworth area--showed overwhelming support for a noontime shuttle service similar to one that has already been approved for Warner Center.

All but two survey respondents favored the shuttle idea, said Stanley Arnold, legal counsel to 12th District Transportation Management Assn., a nonprofit business association set up to help businesses comply with air pollution regulations.

“It would help businesses,” Arnold said. “And it would help to get cars off the street.”

To that end, Arnold said, the group is developing a proposal for van service that would run between Cal State Northridge, Northridge Fashion Center and the commercial areas of Chatsworth around Prairie and Nordhoff streets from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“There would be definite stops, and every 10 minutes you’d have a shuttle going by,” Arnold said.

The group is considering applying to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority for funding, Arnold said.

Most of those surveyed said they would be willing to pay 50 cents to $1 for the service, which could also help defray the cost, he said. Local business might also be tapped for contributions.
