Notes on a Scorecard - Sept. 27, 1993

Mr. Sarcasm on the phone wanted to know what I thought of Jim Everett now. . . . I think what I’ve always thought of Jim Everett. . . .

He is capable of a lousy game one week and a big game the next one and he does some of his best work in the state of Texas when least expected. . . .

On Sunday, he completed 19 of 28 passes for 316 yards and three touchdowns in a 28-13 victory over the defensive forces of Buddy Ryan at Houston a week after the Rams lost to the Giants at the Meadowlands. . . .

Last Nov. 15, he completed 22 of 37 passes for 251 yards and two touchdowns in a 27-23 victory over the Super Bowl champions to-be at Irving, Tex., a week after losing to the Phoenix Cardinals at Anaheim. . . .

OK, I admit that the quarterback draw play during the Rams’ first touchdown drive surprised me. Kind of shocked the Oilers, too. . . .

Maybe Houston should fire Ryan, not Jack Pardee. . . .

So much for Tony Zendejas being the Rams’ only deep threat. . . .

Thumbs up to Chuck Knox for not going too conservative in the second half while trying to protect a lead. . . .

Warren Moon, 36, looked old, particularly when Robert Young or Sean Gilbert was in his face. . . .

Sam Wyche sure has turned around the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. . . .

They must not think field goals are dull in New Orleans. . . .

It used to happen all the time, but Saturday was only the second time since last September that UCLA and USC won on the same day. . . . Welcome to Tailback U. (UCLA) and Quarterback U. (USC). . . .

Bruin freshman Skip Hicks rushed for 148 yards against Nebraska, suffered a sprained ankle, and was replaced by sophomore Sharmon Shah, who got 187 against Stanford. I can’t wait to see what junior Daron Washington can do. . . . Among those opening the holes at Palo Alto was versatile Craig Novitsky, a guard who started at center because of an injury to James Christensen and then moved to tackle when Jonathan Ogden got hurt. . . .

Making life easy for Rob Johnson the night the junior quarterback set a USC record by throwing for 392 yards against Washington State was 6-foot-8, 295-pound left tackle Tony Boselli, who toys with defensive linemen. . . .

The Trojans must be the only 2-2 team with three legitimate All-American candidates-- Boselli, wide receiver Johnnie Morton and defensive end Willie McGinest. . . .

Fans still aren’t occupying many of those 8,000 new ringside seats at the Coliseum. . . .

For all the attention Stanford has gotten, Bill Walsh’s Cardinal is virtually out of the Pacific-10 Conference race in September with two defeats. . . .

Are you ready for unbeaten Oregon against unbeaten Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl? . . .

College officials are inconsistent in their calls of 15-yard penalties for on-field celebrations. . . .

Louisiana Tech--which has been outscored by Tennessee, South Carolina and Alabama, 140-6--is not campaigning for admittance into the Southeastern Conference. . . .

Tied for Crummy Game of the Week with Louisiana Tech vs. Alabama at Birmingham, Ala., was U.S. vs. Bahamas at Charlotte, N.C. . . .

Pernell Whitaker on a possible return bout with Julio Cesar Chavez: “I’m not sure he wants to fight me again. You’ll have to ask him.” . . .

Look-alikes: Nick Faldo and Harrison Ford. . . .

Having their offer sheet for Marty McSorley matched by the Kings before he was traded to Pittsburgh didn’t stop the St. Louis Blues. They didn’t give up much to Winnipeg for Phil Housley, but his salary will be formidable. . . .

During the bust of a betting parlor in last week’s wonderful premiere episode of “NYPD Blue,” a television set showed footage of 1992 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile champion Gilded Time. The colt is owned by “NYPD Blue” writer and co-producer David Milch. . . .

Thoroughbred horse owner Al Michaels and partner David Leveton purchased a colt for $55,000 and a filly, a daughter of Gulch, for $45,000 at the Keeneland yearling sales. . . .

Somehow, the battle for third place in the NL West between the Dodgers and Houston didn’t capture the fancy of L.A. fans. . . .

The scary part about the 2000 Olympics is realizing how old you will be when the Games are conducted in Sydney. . . .
