Lunkers the Attraction at Green Valley Lake

Share

The largest trout in California are being caught at one of the smallest fisheries--10-acre Green Valley Lake, eight miles north of Running Springs off California 18 in the San Bernardino Mountains.

The big fish are planters from the private Whitewater hatchery near Palm Springs, and catches of about 10 pounds have been common. The largest this year was 12 pounds 6 ounces by resident Mark Hadjes Aug. 5, using a nightcrawler.

Jim Allison, who owns the rental boat concession, said state and private plants will continue into November as long as weather permits. Green Valley is at 6,800 feet, slightly higher than Big Bear Lake farther up the road. There is a campground and there are rental cabins at the lake.
