Former Soviet Gymnast Takes Camarillo Job

Arthur Akopyan, a native of Armenia and a 10-year member of the Soviet National Gymnastics Team, has been hired as a coach at Pacific Coast Gymnastics Club in Camarillo.

Akopyan, 33, who lives in Glendale, competed in the 1980 Olympics and was a member of the 1984 Soviet team that boycotted the Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

Akopyan will coach gymnasts of all ages in the floor exercise, vault and bars.

Basketball

The Boys and Girls Clubs of Santa Clarita Valley are sponsoring a three-on-three basketball tournament Oct. 16-17. The tournament will include a three-point shooting and slam-dunk contest.

Entry fees are $30 per team and $2 per entrant for three-point shooting and slam-dunk contests. Participants will receive a T-shirt. Proceeds will benefit the club’s athletic program.

Golf

For the first time in the five-year history of the event, daily tickets will be sold for the Shark Shootout at Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks on Nov. 16-21.

Six-day passes also are available for the event, which pairs 20 of the best professionals in the world. Committed to play in the charity event are tournament host Greg Norman, Nick Price, Davis Love III, Ray Floyd and Chip Beck, among others.
