VALLEY SPORTS : DIGEST : CSUN Recruit Shaw to Have Knee Checked

Share

First baseman Andy Shaw, one of Cal State Northridge’s top recruits, will have his left knee examined today by Angels team Dr. Lewis Yocum. Shaw, a left-handed power hitter from College of the Canyons, has not been able to run or play defense since fall practice began Monday.

“Now I can’t even hit,” Shaw said Thursday.

Shaw, a graduate of Montclair Prep, cannot redshirt next spring because he used a redshirt season at Cal State Fullerton while undergoing reconstructive surgery on his left knee. Under NCAA rules, he has three seasons of eligibility remaining.

Although Shaw favored his knee last season at Canyons, he won the Western State Conference triple crown with a .500 average, 12 home runs and 52 runs batted in. He spent the summer rehabilitating his knee instead of playing baseball.

Littlerock High running back Bryan Wilkins, who after three games leads the Golden League in scoring and rushing yardage, has transferred to Moorpark for personal reasons, Littlerock Coach Jim Bauer said.

Wilkins rushed for 1,279 yards last season as a sophomore and was an all-league selection.

Wilkins (5-foot-10, 180 pounds) had been living in the Antelope Valley with his father and stepmother, Bauer said, until Wilkins’ father died last year. Bauer said that Wilkins recently decided to move back with his mother, who lives in Moorpark’s attendance area.

Because his guardian of record did not move, Wilkins must get a hardship waiver before he can play at Moorpark, Southern Section administrator Bill Clark said. That paperwork has not been filed, Moorpark Coach Rob Dearborn said.

Bauer learned of the decision during a conversation with Wilkins’ stepmother shortly before Littlerock’s game last Friday. Wilkins checked out of Littlerock on Monday.

Wilkins carried the Littlerock offense through three games. He rushed for 420 yards and five touchdowns in 77 carries, all league highs. He had scored all of Littlerock’s 34 offensive points and led the Lobos (1-2) in receptions (four) and receiving yardage (54). He rushed for 1,279 yards in 195 carries last season.
