LOS ANGELES COUNTY : Cutback in Plans to Build, Expand Courthouses Urged

Share

Los Angeles County officials said Friday they will recommend cutbacks in a program to build new courthouses and expand existing ones, setting the stage for a possible fight over which of the 10 scheduled projects will be deferred.

Faced with dwindling revenue, officials of the county administrative office said they expect to release a report next week to the Board of Supervisors that concludes the county cannot afford to proceed with all of its courthouse projects.

CAO officials would not confirm which or how many projects will be recommended for delay. But there were indications that they may urge that a planned $80-million courthouse for Lancaster get priority. Other projects facing review include new or expanded courthouses in North Hollywood, Chatsworth, West Los Angeles, Torrance, Santa Monica, Pasadena, Long Beach, one near Los Angeles International Airport, and one in either Huntington Park or South Gate.
