Two employees of a Target department store in La Verne were found shot to death early Saturday morning in a car in the store’s parking lot, authorities reported.

La Verne police arrived on the scene at Foothill Boulevard and Town Center Drive shortly after receiving a call at 3:49 a.m. from a witness who saw the slayings from a convenience store nearby.

They found a 30-year-old woman and a 22-year-old man--both of whom worked as stockers at the store and who may have just arrived at work--in the front seat of a brown 1987 Plymouth Caravelle parked in front of the store.

Police say the shootings were not random, related to gang activity, drug dealings or the result of a romantic quarrel. “The victims were intended victims, I think,” said La Verne police Sgt. Rick Aragon. He declined to elaborate.

“They do think they have an idea who might have done it,” said Aragon, referring to police detectives now pursuing leads. The victims’ names were being withheld pending notification of their families.
