Gerhart Burian Ladner; Art Historian

Gerhart Burian Ladner, 87, world renowned authority on the history of Medieval art and thought. A naturalized U.S. citizen who was born in Vienna, Ladner studied art and history at the University of Vienna. He later taught at the University of Toronto, the University of Notre Dame, Howard University, Fordham University and UCLA. After he retired from UCLA in 1973, he remained active in his field, lecturing and writing. His most recent book, “Symbolism in Early Christianity,” was published in Germany last year, and the English translation which he recently completed will be published by UC Press in 1994. Last year, Ladner was honored with the lifetime achievement award of the American Historical Assn. On Sept. 21 in Brentwood of cancer.
