The quarterback who played the best for Miami on Saturday will be on the bench next week for the Hurricanes’ showdown against Florida State.

Reserve Ryan Collins replaced an ineffective Frank Costa and completed his first six passes for 102 yards and two touchdowns to spark an otherwise lackluster 30-7 victory over Georgia Southern.

Coach Dennis Erickson said Costa will remain the starter, but Collins could get some playing time next Saturday at Tallahassee, Fla.

“If we’re not moving the football and I feel he can interject something into our offense, we’ll put him in there,” Erickson said. “He can make some things happen, obviously.”

Collins, a sophomore who poses a threat both running and passing, replaced Costa midway through the third quarter with Miami leading, 16-0. In the next 11 minutes, Collins threw touchdown passes of 27 yards to Jonathan Harris and 19 yards to Chris Jones.

Third-ranked Miami improved to 4-0. Division I-AA Georgia Southern is 3-2.

Costa, a junior and first-year starter, completed 10 of 23 passes for 137 yards.
