SOUTHEASTERN ROUNDUP : No. 5 Florida Has the Right Combination

Danny Wuerffel and Chris Doering again combined to lead Florida as the No. 5-ranked Gators defeated Mississippi State, 38-24, in a Southeastern Conference game Saturday at Gainesville, Fla.

Wuerffel passed for a school-record 449 yards in his second college start, and Doering had 12 receptions for 199 yards and scored three touchdowns.

Wuerffel completed 27 of 41 passes and broke the Florida single-game passing record of 408 yards set by Kerwin Bell against Georgia in 1985. It is the third-highest total in SEC history.

Jack Jackson returned a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown as Florida extended the nation’s second-longest home winning streak to a school-record 21 games.

Todd Jordan of Mississippi State (1-3, 0-2) completed 24 of 44 passes for 416 yards and two touchdowns.

Jackson’s third-quarter kickoff return followed Jordan’s 63-yard touchdown pass to Eric Moulds and came just two plays after Florida (4-0, 3-0) had taken a 17-14 lead on a 46-yard field goal by Judd Davis.

Florida’s Errict Rhett gained 122 yards in 19 carries.

No. 11 Tennessee 52, Duke 19--Heath Shuler passed for four touchdowns, including one on Tennessee’s first play at Knoxville, Tenn.

Shuler completed 16 of 18 passes for 226 yards with one interception. Charlie Garner rushed for 129 yards in 10 carries for Tennessee (4-1).

Leroy Gallman returned a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown for Duke (1-4).

Kentucky 21, Mississippi 0--Moe Williams ran for a touchdown and Juha Leonoff kicked two field goals on Kentucky’s first three possessions en route to the SEC victory at Lexington, Ky.

Kentucky (3-2, 2-1 in the SEC) dominated with its offense in the first half and the defense overwhelmed Mississippi (3-2, 2-2) the entire contest.

It was the first time Mississippi has been held scoreless since losing to Arkansas in 1986, spanning 84 regular season and bowl games, and Kentucky’s first shutout of an SEC team since a 33-0 win over Georgia in 1977.

Louisiana State 38, Utah State 17--Freshman Eddie Kennison amassed 228 return and receiving yards, including a 74-yard touchdown pass play, to lead LSU at Baton Rouge, La.

It was only the third win in 14 games for LSU (2-3), which equaled its victory total for all of last season--the worst in LSU’s 99-year history.

Anthony Calvillo, a former standout at La Puente High and Mt. San Antonio College, completed 25 of 46 passes for 261 yards for Utah State (1-4).

Arkansas 20, Georgia 10--Barry Lunney Jr. passed for one touchdown, ran for another and set up a third at Athens, Ga., to give Georgia its worst start ever in the SEC.

Arkansas (3-2, 2-1) ended a nine-quarter touchdown drought when Lunney connected with J.J. Meadors on a 72-yard touchdown pass play in the second quarter.

Georgia (1-4, 0-4) took a 10-7 halftime lead 15 seconds before the break on a one-yard touchdown pass from Eric Zeier to Terrell Davis, who rushed for 177 yards.
