MIGHTY DUCKS ‘93-94: PREMIERE SEASON : Player Profiles

Robin Bawa 26 Age: 27 Right Wing Shoots: R Big, strong and tough, but without a standout NHL track record. A former San Jose Shark, Vancouver Canuck and Washington Capital. He’s scored only six career goals in 49 NHL games. Selected in the expansion draft from San Jose, where he played 42 games last season.

Patrik Carnback 21 Age: 25 Center Shoots: L Swedish player has moved from wing to center with Ducks. He spent most of last season with Fredericton, compiling 57 points in 45 games, before joining Montreal. Played in six games for the Stanley Cup-champion Canadiens, but did not score. Traded Aug. 10 to the Ducks along with Todd Ewen.

Bob Corkum 20 Age: 25 Center Shoots: R Expected to be Ducks’ checking center. In his first full season in the NHL, he scored six goals with four assists and 38 penalty minutes in 68 games for the Buffalo Sabres. He was Buffalo’s third-round pick in the 1989 entry draft. Had a 34 points and 147 penalty minutes with Rochester in 1990-91.

Bobby Dollas 2 Age: 28 Defenseman Shoots: L Gained a measure of distinction by scoring the Ducks’ first exhibition goal. Commit the name to memory and just think of all the bets you’ll win 10 years from now. He’s spent much of his career in the minors, but played briefly with Detroit, Quebec and Winnipeg.

Peter Douris 16 Age: 27 Right Wing Shoots: R Injured his left knee while scoring a goal during a scrimmage and could be out four to six weeks. A former Winnipeg Jet and Boston Bruin who played 50 games for AHL Providence last season, scoring 29 goals with 26 assists. Also played 19 games for Boston. Signed as a free agent in July.

Todd Ewen 36 Age: 27 Right Wing Shoots: R Helped Montreal win the Stanley Cup last season, then in August was traded to the Ducks along with Patrik Carnback. Scored a career-high 14 points (five goals, nine assists) for the Canadiens last season. Also had 193 penalty minutes, which means he should fit in just fine with the Ducks.

Mark Ferner 3 Age: 28 Defenseman Shoots: L He played for the San Diego Gulls, the team with the best winning percentage in all of pro hockey last season. Spent 26 games with the Gulls and 34 games with New Haven of the American Hockey League. He has recorded four assists in 24 career NHL games.

Stu Grimson 32 Age: 28 Left Wing Shoots: L The Grim Reaper. Figures to be the Ducks’ first cult hero. He’s already tangled with Marty McSorley and it was only an exhibition game. Tough in the corners. An intimidating enforcer, who will make sure the Ducks don’t get pushed around this season. Three NHL goals vs. 632 penalty minutes.

Guy Hebert 31 Age: 26 Goalie Catches: L He was the Ducks’ No. 1 pick in the expansion draft. He will probably share the difficult job of expansion goaltender with Ron Tugnutt. Hebert played 24 games for the St. Louis Blues last season, compiling a 3.67 goals-against average. Career NHL record of 13-13-3 with one shutout.

Sean Hill 6 Age: 23 Defenseman Shoots: L One minute he was on the Stanley Cup champions, the next a Mighty Duck. Hill played 31 games with the Montreal Canadiens last season, scoring two goals with six assists and 54 penalty minutes. It was the first lengthy NHL action for the former U.S. national team member.

Bill Houlder 23 Age: 26 Defenseman Shoots: L He was a plus five with three goals and five assists in 15 games with the Buffalo Sabres last season. He’s spent almost all of his career in the minors, but had a 72-point season for the San Diego Gulls last season and was voted the top defenseman in the International Hockey League.

Alexei Kasatonov 7 Age: 33 Defenseman Shoots: L Spent 12 seasons playing for the Central Red Army team in the former Soviet Elite League before joining the New Jersey Devils in 1989. He’s a strong, steady defenseman who had three goals and 14 assists in 64 games for the Devils last season. Also played in three Olympics for the Soviets.

Steven King 17 Age: 24 Right Wing Shoots: R The first forward selected by Ducks in the expansion draft. Team chose him from the New York Rangers, where he saw his first extensive NHL action. Scored seven goals with five assists in 24 games with the Rangers. Spent most of the season with Binghamton of the American Hockey League.

Randy Ladouceur 29 Age: 33 Defenseman Shoots: L Ranks among the most experienced Ducks, having played 11 seasons with the Hartford Whalers and Detroit Red Wings. He was the Whalers’ team captain for the past three seasons before they left him unprotected in the expansion draft. With only 26 career goals, he’s a defensive-minded defenseman.

Denny Lambert 42 Age: 23 Left Wing Shoots: L Helped the San Diego Gulls compile the best record in the International Hockey League, with a potent blend of scoring and physical play. He had 18 goals, 12 assists and 277 penalty minutes in 56 games. Penalty minutes were the second-highest on the team last season. Signed as a free agent.

Lonnie Loach 27 Age: 25 Left Wing Shoots: L He’s been through this expansion gig before, having been an Ottawa Senator for all of three games last season. The Kings plucked him off the waiver wire when the Senators released him and he scored 10 goals with 13 assists in 50 games. It was his longest stint in the NHL.

Troy Loney 24 Age: 30 Left Wing Shoots: L A long-time member of the Pittsburgh Penguins, whose best season came in 1989-90 when he scored a career-high 11 goals. He also had nine points in the 1991-92 playoffs, helping the Penguins win their second consecutive Stanley Cup. Scored five goals with 16 assists in 82 games last season.

Myles O’Connor 44 Age: 26 Defenseman Shoots: L He proved to be an offensive force two seasons ago, scoring nine goals with 39 assists with Utica of the American Hockey League. Played seven games with the New Jersey Devils. Has played 38 NHL games, scoring three goals with three assists and 91 penalty minutes.

Joe Sacco 14 Age: 24 Left/Right Wing Shoots: R Speedy skater played 23 games with the Toronto Maple Leafs and 37 games with St. John’s of the American Hockey League. In 1991-92, he played for more teams than any other Duck. Spent time with the Toronto, St. John’s and the U.S. national and Olympic teams.

Anatoli Semenov 19 Age: 31 Center Shoots: L Finesse playmaker spent 11 seasons with Moscow Dynamo, scoring 303 points in 405 games. Jumped to the Edmonton Oilers and played in two playoff games as they won the 1989-90 Stanley Cup. Started last season with Tampa Bay but was traded to Vancouver. Had 49 points in 75 games.

Jarrod Skalde 10 Age: 22 Center Shoots: L A great scorer on the junior level, but he had little chance to play with the New Jersey Devils the past three seasons. Last season, he played 11 games for the Devils (zero goals and two assists) and 59 games for Utica of the American Hockey League (21 goals and 39 assists).

Tim Sweeney 8 Age: 26 Left Wing Shoots: L Has been a consistent scorer in the minors, but hasn’t had much chance to play in the NHL. Last season, he scored 41 goals with 55 assists in 60 games with Providence of the American Hockey League and had one goal and seven assists in 14 games with the Boston Bruins.

Jim Thomson 33 Age: 27 Right Wing Shoots: R Once a King, then a Senator, then a King again and now a Duck. He’s another tough guy. Racked up 56 penalty minutes in nine games with the Kings last season. Did not score or have an assist. Has impressed Coach Ron Wilson as a player with more ability than his reputation suggests.

Ron Tugnutt 1 Age: 25 Goalie Catches: L He was Bill Ranford’s backup with the Edmonton Oilers last season, going 9-12-2 with a 4.17 goals-against average. Has seen his share of rubber. As a member of the Quebec Nordiques in 1990-91, he faced 73 shots, stopping 70, in a game against Boston. Each was a post-World War II record.

Shaun Van Allen 22 Age: 26 Center Shoots: L He was a tremendous scorer in the minors, leading the American Hockey League with 29 goals and 84 assists as a member of the Cape Breton Oilers in 1991-92. NHL numbers have been low. Had one goal and four assists in 21 games for Edmonton last season, then signed as a free agent in July.

David Williams 4 Age: 26 Defenseman Shoots: R Got his first NHL experience with the San Jose Sharks in 1991-92, playing 56 games. Split time between San Jose and Kansas City of the International Hockey League last season. Had one goal and 11 assists in 40 games with the Sharks. Made the jump from Dartmouth to San Jose in about a year.

Terry Yake 25 Age: 24 Right Wing Shoots: R He’ll be counted on for much of the Ducks’ scoring. Creative, two-way player is moving from center to right wing. Left unprotected by Hartford after scoring 22 goals with 31 assists. Ducks hope he’ll emerge as the Brian Bradley (42 goals for Tampa Bay last season) of 1993-94.
