Shark Shootout to Include 8 From U.S. Ryder Cup Team

Eight of the 12 members of the victorious American Ryder Cup team have committed to play in the Shark Shootout Nov. 16-21 at Lake Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks.

Chip Beck, Ray Floyd, Tom Kite, Davis Love III, Lanny Wadkins, Paul Azinger, Payne Stewart and Corey Pavin all are scheduled to play in the charity event, which is sponsored by Greg Norman. Nick Price also is expected to play.

Ten two-man teams will compete in the shootout, which combines alternate-shot, best-ball and scramble formats.

A fund-raiser golf tournament benefiting the Pepperdine scholarship fund will be held Nov. 15 at North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village.

An instructional clinic, featuring a demonstration from PGA Tour standout and former Ryder Cup member Steve Pate, will be held before the tournament. Mike Gorton, the 1987 National Long Drive champion, also will be on hand.

Players may enter as individuals or in foursomes.

Volleyball

Jennifer Streltzoff, a former volleyball player for Thousand Oaks High now at Cal State Bakersfield, has been named athlete of the month for September by the American Volleyball Coaches Assn.

Auto Racing

Ventura Raceway has canceled the final two off-road events of the season, ending the track’s off-road season. The canceled dates are Oct. 16 and Nov. 13.

Stock-car racing resumes Friday night and continues until Nov. 13.

Equestrian

The Interscholastic Equestrian League horse show, a competition involving teams from about 30 high schools, will be held Sunday at the Hansen Dam Equestrian Center in Lake View Terrace. Competition begins at 8 a.m.

Local teams scheduled to compete include Louisville, Buckley, Alemany, Calabasas, Chaminade, Harvard-Westlake and Poly.
