Long Scoring Plays Help Bellflower Beat Buena Park

Share

Buena Park played Bellflower tough for most of the first half Friday night, only to get burned by Bellflower’s big plays.

Jay Young, who completed just three of 11 passes, hit Lonya Lee on nearly identical touchdown passes of 81 and 75 yards and Bellflower cruised to a 25-7 victory at Bellflower High School.

The two teams were mired in a defensive struggle until Young and Lee hooked up on an 81-yard pass play up the left sideline, with just 42 seconds left in the second quarter.

Then, on Bellflower’s (4-1) first possession of the second half, Young hit Lee on a third-and-18 play for 75 yards and a 12-0 lead.

Buena Park (0-5) drove inside Bellflower’s 15-yard line twice in the first half, but failed to score. George McDonald threw an interception at the two-yard line on Buena Park’s first possession, then fumbled on Bellflower’s 13 on fourth and five with 1:30 left in the second quarter.

Mark Hays put the game out of reach in the second half with touchdown runs of 45 and 13 yards. Buena Park avoided the shut out when McDonald hit Chris Baca on a 34-yard touchdown pass with 4:45 left in the game.

Buena Park’s Tim Jones led all rushers with 95 yards in 17 carries.
