DIVING IN: Nearly 95,000 San Fernando Valley residents had taken the plunge into car-pooling and van-pooling by the time of the 1990 U.S. census. Sharing transportation was most popular in the northeast Valley, where 21% of residents pooled rides. That’s six percentage points above the average for Los Angeles as a whole. The figures are for drivers 16 and older.

PRISON SCHISM: Antelope Valley residents told Lancaster City Council members to take their proposed new prison facility and shelve it. (B1) . . . In the wake of a recent escape from a state prison there, they want no new such buildings in the area. City Council members said that given the opposition, the proposal is probably dead for the time being.

TOUGH GUY: If President Clinton is to get his health reform package through Congress, he’ll likely have to stay on the good side of Rep. Henry Waxman, whose district includes parts of Studio City and Sherman Oaks. (M3) . . . Waxman, whose in-fighting skills are legendary, has been chairman of the powerful health subcommittee of the House Energy and Commerce Committee for 14 years.
