For one half, Darrell Bevell was perfect. Every pass he threw was caught, and the Wisconsin quarterback was making it look all too easy for the unbeaten Badgers.

“I knew I was going pretty well, it was a great feeling,” Bevell said Saturday after leading No. 21 Wisconsin to a 53-14 victory over Northwestern.

Wisconsin is 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the Big Ten. The last time the Badgers started a season 5-0 (in 1977), they lost their final six games. Northwestern is 2-3 and 1-2.

Bevell completed all 14 of his first-half passes and finished 17 of 18 to set a Big Ten record for completion percentage (.944). He broke the 1985 record by Michigan’s Jim Harbaugh (.923).

Wisconsin’s point total was its biggest since getting 56 against Minnesota in 1983.

Bevell’s 14th completion in a row resulted in a 23-yard touchdown to Lee DeRamus with 1:27 left in half that put the Badgers ahead 27-14. The play capped Wisconsin’s third 80-yard scoring drive of the half.

Bevell, who had 207 yards passing, missed on his first pass of the second half but the Badgers kept going, scoring on their first three possessions.

Terrell Fletcher ran for three touchdowns for Wisconsin and Brent Moss had two. Moss rushed for 125 yards in 15 carries--his fourth straight game over 100 yards.
