COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Graff-Ermeling Wins With Meet Record

Genevieve Graff-Ermeling of Concordia broke a meet record, running 5,000 meters in 18 minutes 17 seconds, to win the women’s individual competition Saturday at the Southern California College Invitational cross-country meet at Back Bay in Newport Beach.

Graff-Ermeling took 24 seconds off the record set by SCC’s Sherry Hall. Nikee Pool of Southern California College was second in 19:17.

Whittier College won the team competition with 30 points, 22 ahead of Southern California College. Concordia finished third with 87.

In men’s competition, Southern California College swept the first three places with Jason Schaefer (27:07 for 8,000 meters), Dan Palmer (27:32) and Tim Hardin (27:36). Edward Uyuh Whittier College took fourth in 27:39.

Despite the top-three finish, Southern California College had to go to the sixth man to beat Whittier Christian in the team competition after tying with 50 points. La Verne was third with 73.

In the NorCal Water Polo Tournament:

Irvine advances--No. 7 UC Irvine upset fifth-ranked UC Santa Barbara, then lost to No. 3 Cal at Berkeley.

Irvine and California advanced to the tournament’s final four today.

The Anteaters (8-5) defeated UC Santa Barbara, 6-4, behind two goals each from Marc Hunt, Kurt Edler and Greg Hakim. Irvine goalie Mike Rall had nine saves.

In the 12-7 loss to Cal, Edler had four goals. Troy Barnhart had four goals, and Mike Sparling three for the Bears.

In Golden State Athletic Conference men’s soccer:

Southern California College 3, Azusa Pacific 1--Nguyen Tran, Randy Dodge and Hector Perez scored for SCC (5-8, 3-3).

Point Loma Nazarene 2, Concordia 0--Eddie Huerta recorded 14 saves, but Concordia lost its 11th consecutive game. Socrates Scatolini and T.J. Callahan scored for Point Loma Nazarene.

In Golden State Athletic Conference women’s volleyball:

Southern California College 3, Concordia 1--Celeste Young and Genevie Wright each had 18 kills for Southern California College, which won, 15-12, 9-15, 15-10, 15-3. Karajean Stephenson had 50 assists for SCC.

SCC is 8-10, 1-5; Concordia is 7-12, 0-6.

In nonconference women’s soccer:

UC Irvine 4, Gonzaga 0--Chris Awadallah scored on a 40-yard shot, and Linda Lewin had the first two assists of her career for Irvine (9-3). Stephanie Boes recorded her fourth shutout for the Anteaters.
