After a week of controversy and speculation, Canyon High football Coach Harry Welch said Saturday he will announce Monday whether he will resign.

Welch, 48, told his players he is considering resignation after Friday night’s 14-13 loss to Alemany, sources said.

“My wife (Cindy) and I will make a decision this weekend,” Welch said. “This has been as emotionally trying for my wife as it has for me.”

Several parents of Canyon football players organized a meeting to discuss Welch’s situation on Saturday. At that meeting, Welch discussed several options with the parents, including retirement or a leave of absence.

“I think a lot of things were said,” Welch said. “But nothing was definite.”

The Cowboys (3-2) have lost two consecutive games and Welch has been involved in controversy after he allegedly was assaulted by a booster after Canyon’s 25-14 loss to Quartz Hill on Oct. 1.
