Miami quarterback Dan Marino will be sidelined for the rest of the season after undergoing surgery Monday on a ruptured right Achilles’ tendon.

Marino will be replaced by Scott Mitchell, who came off the bench against Cleveland and threw his first two NFL touchdown passes in a 24-14 victory at Cleveland.

Marino’s injury was the most serious to a Miami quarterback since Bob Griese suffered an injured right leg in the fifth game of the 1972 season. Led by backup Earl Morrall, the Dolphins went on to the only unbeaten season in NFL history.

Marino had been healthy for so long that he said that he never thought about injuries.

“Sometimes you do take it for granted,” he said Sunday. “You go out there and play every Sunday and nothing happens. Then all of a sudden when something does, it’s a shock.”

Sunday’s game was the 145th in a row that Marino had started, almost double the second-longest by an active quarterback--85 by the Rams’ Jim Everett. That includes every nonstrike game since the start of 1984.

Defensive tackle Steve Emtman of Indianapolis had surgery on his right knee Monday to repair torn two ligaments and a tendon and the Colts confirmed he will miss the rest of the season. . . . The Colts also said they will go with Jeff George at quarterback when they resume play after their second bye week.
